11. I Am Not Okay With This

This is the second adaptation of a Charles Forsman graphic novel by Johnathan Entwhistle, after the hugely enjoyable The End Of The F***ing World and he has delivered another belter.

Sophia Lillis stars as Sydney Novak, attempting to deal with the trauma of entering puberty, not long after the suicide of her father. She loses her best friend to love, while becoming a source of attraction for the local nerd. Pimples arrive in areas where she wishes they wouldn't and her mother blocks herself away to deal with the grief.

And she has superpowers.

The series shares themes with both Carrie and Eleven from Stranger Things. Several producers in fact work on both shows, with this idea of arriving toward adulthood appearing in both. However, this is not a straight copy by any means.

The show is both funny and dark. It is uplifting with moments of tragedy. Sydney's pain is palpable yet her journey is one that is enjoyable to follow. Lillis, so impressive already in the big budget adaptation of Stephen King's IT, proves that was no fluke.

Her struggle to control her powers is relatable to anyone who has struggled with their own bodies in that period of their life (read: everyone) and her frustration jumps from the screen.

It is a wonderful example of the journey to womanhood, told through telekinesis. Funny, warm and moving.
