15 Best New TV Characters Of The Decade
1. Rick Sanchez - Rick & Morty
Rick & Morty really has no right being as good as it is. Adapted from a fairly one note, crudely animated Back To The Future parody (the one note being Marty licking Doc’s balls), the pilot was famously written by Harmon in a single night.
Not because inspiration struck, but because he had to give the execs his script the next day and he’d put it off until the last minute.
Despite that though, Rick & Morty has become a phenomenon. Whether its making fans queue for hours and almost riot over McDonald’s Szechuan sauce or winning Emmys for turning the lead character into a sentient pickle, Rick & Morty has done it all.
Though Rick is supported by a great cast of regulars and one off wacky heroes, he’s the runaway star here. Deranged, ruthless, extraordinarily intelligent and hilariously cutting, Rick is a character like no other. No one else has schemes so outlandish or insults so devastating.
With such an off the rails character though, it would be easy for the show to trade on Rick and become lazy. Instead, they’ve produced fantastic animation, amazingly funny episodes and well thought, developed plots across the seasons.
