15 Famous Artists You Didn't Know Competed In Eurovision
4. Engelbert Humperdinck - Love Will Set You Free (United Kingdom)
What Is He Known For? Originally born Arnold George Dorsey and took his stage name from a German opera composer, Engelbert Humperdinck was one of the biggest music names during the late 1960s and 1970s, and his best known singles were Release Me, The Last Waltz and After the Lovin'. Over the course of his career, Humperdinck earned four Grammy nominations, sold over 150 million records, and received 63 gold and 24 platinum records.
At Eurovision (Twenty-Fifth Place): It was on the back of this accomplished career that Engelbert Humperdinck was chosen to represent the United Kingdom for the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku, Azerbaijan. He performed first out of twenty-six finalist countries with the song Love Will Set You Free.
For someone who was seventy-six at the time of the contest, Humperdinck still had a strong, clear voice just as good as his popularity peak in the sixties and seventies. Despite a good performance, however, Humperdinck only earned twelve cumulative points and landed in twenty-fifth position, barely escaping last place.
After Eurovision: Engelbert Humperdinck may not have been a popular act at Eurovision, but he still has enough of a loyal global fanbase that he can still sell out shows even in his advanced years. That is a remarkable feat of a fifty-year career, and Humperdinck should be commended for it.
