15 Times Rick And Morty Was The Best Show On Television

9. The Insanely Dark Death Scenes

Rick and Morty Bully Death
Adult Swim

A running theme throughout Rick and Morty is taking common sci-fi stories and playing out the twisted implications of them. That includes some death scenes that you normally don't see in these types of adventures and that are just so insanely brutal.

There's a great example of that in the pilot where Rick shows up and shoots a school bully with a freeze ray. Most shows would keep going and ignore this for the rest of the episode, but here, Summer walks past the bully just as he falls over and shatters into a million pieces. Then later you actually see a bunch of students gathered around his locker with flowers.

There's another similar moment in the Anatomy Park episode where Morty is trying to save a guy who's being sucked away to his death. "You're not gonna die," Morty assures him. "What's your name?" Normally in movies, this would be the moment where they have some emotional conversation before the guy is saved. But here, he doesn't even get to finish saying his name before he's sucked away and his skin is completely ripped off his body. Holy crap.

Moments like these are darkly hilarious and show that dangerous adventures through time and space aren't all fun and games. People are going to die, and that's going to have real consequences.
