16. Spider-Noir
On paper, at least, Spider-Noir is a headscratcher: what if Nic Cage played an alternate version of Spider-Man as an embittered PI attempting to fight crime the old-fashioned way in 1930s New York?
Drawing on decades of inspiration from film noirs and detective stories, Spider-Noir was released in both black-and-white and colour (the black-and-white version is the best and most suitable one), and proved with a spry and lived-in first episode to have more than a few tricks up its sleeve.
Reimagining many of Spidey's foes for a setting reminiscent of a Raymond Chandler novel, the slick crime drama offers heaps of real fun, especially as Cage sinks deeper into a cesspool of city-wide corruption and must confront the dark parts of his past, which are holding him back from being the web-slinging hero he once was.
Gorgeously shot and genuinely mysterious, Spider-Noir is a hard-boiled crime caper that proves there's still plenty of juice left when it comes to telling superhero stories on the screen.
