6 Things Community Needs To Do If They Get Season 6
4. Focus More On Jeff As A Teacher
After what the show has called "The Gas-Leak Year" in reference to the Harmon-less season four, the show needed a way to get the character of Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) back into school after he had graduated and gotten his degree. Season five started with a clever nod to rebooting itself like Scrubs and showed Jeff agreeing to become a teacher at Greendale. This explanation seemed rife with possibilities as Jeff was now responsible to shaping young minds as well as manipulating the study group (now dubbed the Save Greendale Committee). Soon after the first couple episodes, however, that story fell by the wayside in a way reminiscent of many plot threads of season four. Getting Jeff in as a teacher explains why he is there but aside from giving him access to the faculty lounge the series has quickly steered away from showing Jeff in his new profession. This could be a mistake. If the rest of season five doesn't follow Jeff's exploits behind the desk season six most definitely should. With all of the Scrubs references in the first episode and Community's love of being meta it seems a wasted opportunity not to have an episode explore the "Backdoor Pilot" TV trope. The episode would start off with Jeff and maybe a coupe other regulars but would soon turn into an entire episode devoted to a few of Jeff's students, perhaps forming their own study group. This would obviously poke fun at all the series that tried to use this method to get a new series started (Brady Bunch, Golden Girls, recently The Office) and also tie back into the initial Scrubs comparison. For a show that is known for doing a fake clip show episode itonly seems logical that they would try a fake backdoor pilot. Even if they don't go that route showing Jeff struggles at the blackboard would be a perfect way to mine some more laughs in another season.
