7 Reasons Why The Third Doctor Changed The Course Of Doctor Who

2. The First Introduction to Popular Enemies

TheMasterdelgado It was in the Third Doctor's era that we are introduced to enemies of the Doctor, that are quite the popular ones today. Some still show up in the New Series, although the appearance is much different. As before mentioned, the Master is introduced, and Roger Delgado is still regarded as one of the best actors to ever have played the character. There have been quite a few actors that have taken on the role after Roger:Peter Pratt, Geoffrey Beevers, (they both portrayed a massively decayed Master, as though something must have happened to the Master between the Pertwee era and Baker era), Anthony Ainley, Eric Roberts, Derek Jacobi and John Simm. Everyone has their favorite version, but frankly, if you wanted mastermind and deception and mind-controlling, then Roger Delgado's Master was the one. He was one never to be trusted. Since the Master was introduced, the character was one that returned most frequently out of all the Doctor's enemies. The Silurians and Sea Devils were two more menaces introduced in the Jon Pertwee era, and returned again in Peter Davison's Fifth Doctor story, Warriors of the Deep. Although there still aren't any Sea Devils in the New Series, the Silurians have made a comeback. Though the costuming and makeup of the new Silurians isn't that bad, despite what the explanations may be, they do not look anything like the Silurians from before. The Silurians in Pertwee's era were menacing, they wanted to destroy mankind and takeover Earth, which they believed was rightfully theirs. Of course the Third Doctor was able to negotiate, but the Brigadier did otherwise. Thus, comes in the effects in Warriors of the Deep. They are still menacing, and even more blood-thirsty after what had happened when they first approached the Doctor. Who could forget the Autons? They first appeared in Jon Pertwee's first episode as the Third Doctor, Spearhead from Space. Window-shop mannequins came alive and marched through the streets. It was terrifying. They would return again in Terror of the Autons, along with the Master and Jo. The Autons made such an impact to those who were watching the Third Doctor on the television, that the fans who moved into making new Who, made the very first episode of the Ninth Doctor about the Autons.
