Specifically, this entry implies the 1997 anime and does not discuss the 2016-17 versions of the show that attempted to act as a sequel to the one season-long narrative. The twenty-five episode series works well on its own merits, and despite the fact that the ending will not feel entirely satisfying, it's best to watch on its own.

Berserk is the first entry in this article that genuinely changes the stakes of the genre. This is not a fun exploration of what fantasy can be - it's a dark, human story about the price of ambition and purpose.

The show follows the swordsman Guts and his adventures working within The Band of the Hawk, with the mission to make their leader, Griffith, a king. It's best to go into this show not knowing where the story goes as it truly does take the audience by surprise.

It has some excellent action moments, but ultimately the highlight of the animation is the quieter segments. This show has a haunting soundtrack that accompanies some wonderful character development.

It is entirely worth your time even if you may not be a big fan of anime. It's a shame that the series couldn't continue, and that the later attempts to do so were such a failure - but at least this version is well worth the watch.
