Something the best of Marvel's Netflix series understand is that a superhero storyline can be used to reflect societal issues and themes. Jessica Jones season 1, for example, is essentially about a woman attempting to stop her rapist. Cloak & Dagger seems to be doing something similar.

Sure, on the surface, the series is about two super-powered teenagers, but along the way it's got some things to say about various social injustices. In just the three episodes we've got so far, it's examined the class divide, greedy corporations mistreating their workers, drug addiction, the problem of homelessness in urban centres ETC.

Perhaps the clearest example of the show attempting to address some hot button issues is - spoilers - the death of Tyrone's brother in the pilot episode. An innocent young black man killed by a cop for wrongly being accused of committing a crime is sadly an all too familiar scenario in this day and age.

No one's knocking classic comic book-y goodness but, to Cloak & Dagger's credit, it's using the Marvel world to tell a story that feels very real and contemporary. Hopefully this will get stronger as it goes along.
