8 Times American Horror Story Went Too Far

American Horror Story often tackles taboo and uncomfortable topics that other prime time television shows choose not to examine in detail. Madison Montgomery's rape in the anthology series third season, Coven, certainly falls into this category of perhaps being depicted in just a bit too much of a realistic light.

The thing that tipped many viewers over the edge with Madison's rape scene is that it seemed to feed into a more pornographic and voyeuristic view of rape instead of depicting it as a heinous crime. The main reason it was viewed this way by audiences is because of the fact it wasn't just one perpetrator assaulting Madison, but a group of young men. It glorified Madison's rape, and despite the men being punished by her soon after the assault, it still holds a certain degree of unnecessarily pornographic violence.

Her assault is violent and uncomfortable to watch, which despite being the main point Murphy tries to convey, is unnecessarily graphic and does not really feel as though it serves the political point that was intended and instead comes across as a voyeuristic take on a serious issue.
