Freak Show is hailed by many American Horror Story fans as one of the top-tier seasons in the anthology series thanks to its great storylines and character development. However, something about the concept of the season as a whole is just a little bit off.

We already know by this point that American Horror Story exploits situations and concepts that often are not explored on television due to their taboo nature, but perhaps this is one concept that should have never progressed beyond the pitch meeting.

Even though the concept of Freak Show as a season is to depict those who are typically marginalised by society due to their physical differences as being the same as the general population who reject them, we can't help but still question the good that the season claims to have done. As the timeline for the show is set in the 1950s, there is still a significant amount of discrimination and inappropriate behaviour portrayed by most of the characters; in keeping with attitudes displayed toward these individuals at the time.

Despite being historically accurate, arguably even portraying these attitudes on-screen produced more harm than good.
