American Horror Story: 10 Things Freak Show Must Do Better Than Its Predecessors

10. Keep It Unpredictable

It may simply be that viewers have become more accustomed to American Horror Story over the years, but each season is getting more and more predictable. At no point during Murder House did you think that you could guess what was going to happen. When Violet was revealed as a ghost, it came as a complete shock - and was an utterly absorbing twist (having been done in a far better manner than The Sixth Sense). But by the time Coven came around the twists were all used up. Sure when it was revealed that Cordelia was the Supreme it was interesting, but not much of a shock as it seemed like a suitable choice, especially since the show had been heavily hinting that it was going to be either Madison or Zoe. So Freak Show needs to keep things coming at the viewer out of left field. Remember that fans are expecting twists €“ so by trying to make something obvious, it is only natural for them to look in the opposite direction €“ exactly what happened with Cordelia. So play to the genre's strengths and keep those fans on the rails, because if the viewers are sitting on the edge of their seats then they'll come back for more.
