Each season of American Horror Story is a self-contained story, but it’s still rather surprising that the first season of the show ending on a massive cliffhanger. Even though we’ve experienced a series of wonderful seasons since, it’s been incredibly frustrating not knowing how the story of Murder House was meant to end.

Being the highly-anticipated Murder House/Coven crossover, the hope was that Apocalypse would finally give us the answers that we so desperately craved. Return To Murder House does exactly that.

Since Madison and Chablis are as clueless as we are at the beginning of the episode, we have the opportunity to learn the truth via them. It’s an excellent narrative device to have two uninformed protagonists, as it gives the writers the perfect way to deliver the rest of this story without it coming off like exposition.

As for the remainder of the Murder House story itself, well it’s pretty damn perfect. Despite years of torment, Moira gets her happy ending, and lovers Tate and Violet reconcile. However, it’s Constance’s hell (pun intended) over raising Michael that steals the show. In fact, it’s rather heart-breaking. This is what American Horror Story does best: it makes us feel sympathy for the vilest characters known to man.
