Buffy The Vampire Slayer: 10 Great Moments In Mediocre Episodes
1. Giles Sings Behind Blue Eyes (Season 4, Episode 18)
‘Where the Wild Things Are’ is one of the low points of Season 4. Buffy and Riley’s enthusiastic sex life somehow triggers a supernatural event, which causes huge vines to spread throughout the house. It’s a ludicrous premise, but the episode is redeemed by one outstanding scene.
Keen to find help, Willow, Tara, Xander, and Anya go looking for Giles, and they find him at Espresso Pump performing a cover of ‘Behind Blue Eyes’ by The Who.
The reactions from the other characters are just perfect. Xander’s look of mild horror clashes with the ladies’ stares of admiration. Willow – after gaping open-mouthed for several seconds – admits that she used to have a crush on Giles, making Xander even more uncomfortable.
As well as providing the audience with plenty of humour, this scene also presents the Watcher in a new light. Even though Giles has been a primary character since the very first episode, it’s the first time we get to experience his musical talents.
Though this scene is packaged within a lacklustre episode, it’s still one of the best moments of Season 4.
