Community: The Worst Episode From Every Season

3. Season 4 - Intro To Felt Surrogacy

Community Abed
NBC

Season 4's resident 'animated' episode was a little different to the others. This time, The Study Group were felt hand puppets. On paper, an episode of Community starring felt hand puppets that sing sounds brilliant. Right up Community's street, right?

Well unfortunately, this musical adventure was not what it sounded like. From the start the episode felt a bit wrong, which could be do with Pierce's absence. This actually happened because Pierce actor Chevy Chase had fallen out with the writers and stormed off set towards the end of season 4's filming, and never returned. This meant Pierce was absent from a few episodes they filmed at the end, which includes the live-action sections of this episode. He'd previously recorded his lines for the felt puppets so was able to appear in the episode in some regard.

Aside from this, the whole episode felt too over the top, while somehow also lifeless. The overall story was fine, but not particularly interesting. The singing felt forced, as did the 'moral of the story'.

Season 4 was already a problematic season, but this episode was just oozing with the exact issues the rest did. Combined with the jarring and unexplained absence of Pierce, Intro To Felt Surrogacy is simply not a good episode.
