3. Gallifrey Stands
Another synthesis of classic and new Who is made possible with the resurrection of Gallifrey. Its first seen on screen in 'The War Games' and with a bit of creative thinking it could be put to great use. A story arc could easily be made of the Shearsmith's Second and the War Chief awaiting trial to tally into the start of ' Spearhead From Space' and set up the Doctor's work for the Celestial Intervention Agency in the interim.Visited in his cell by Straxus, who offers him the chance to stave off and maybe even avert forced regeneration a while, he's given the opportunity to join up as an agent, which is readily accepted on condition he gets at least one companion to accompany him. Jamie is plucked from Scotland with his memories of his time with the Doctor intact if slightly altered, as in ' The Two Doctors'. Or as in 'World Game' a companion is foisted upon him, which could mean seeing and hearing more of the Time Lady Serena. With the added bonus that Shearsmith would get chance to play another dual role in a sense the Doctor and Napoleon Bonaparte, that great French political and military figure. This opens up a chance to revisit the purely historical 'Who' story with the Doctor acting as a spy for Lord Nelson by impersonating Napoleon himself and obtaining information vital to a positive outcome for the Battle of Waterloo as in the book and a possible performance of ABBA's 'Waterloo' on recorder in a comedy moment. Just me? Oh, ok then. A pre or post-'Two Doctors' visit to Space Station Chimera could also delve into the backstory between Dastari and the Time Lord, a great potential lead to follow. The bio-geneticist and time travel experimentalist's background and motivations are left relatively unexplained in his first tangle with the Second and Sixth Doctors, leaving a rich vein of new material for the willing scribe to explore both the genuine begrudging respect and enmity between the two men of science. All thanks to the CIA, so maybe they're not at all as bad as has been made out!
