Doctor Who: 10 Ways Patrick Troughton Made The Recorder Cool

10. What Does It All Mean, Doctor?

Doctor Who Traughton In Michael Scott's 50th Anniversary e-short 'The Nameless City', the Doctor's recorder of choice is described as plain with blue stripes. And when we see it in glorious colour in 'The Three Doctors' that's exactly what we get. The Third Doctor seems to hate it with a passion but it gives rise to one of the best pop music gags classic 'Who' ever made.. The dandier of the three finds the recorder on his TARDIS console. Acknowledging it as a recorder, the scene is set for his previous self to appear. He then takes it from him and gives it a quick play. And that's not even the best bit. The two of them try to explain to Jo Grant that they're not just Time Lords, but the same one. 'I am he and he is me' says the Third. 'And we are all together?' comes the response. Not unreasonable. She then proves a little more in tune with popular culture than the two of them put together in explaining her jokey reference to the Beatles and 'I Am The Walrus'. Neat for sure. But then the Second steals the show. 'How does it go?' he innocently enquires-intending to learn it by heart and possibly blow the minds of the Fab Four themselves in a later adventure. Also notable for the first and probably funniest use of the 'I don't like it' TARDIS redecoration gag. See it here;
