12. Dr Who Motivational Posters

By: thatenglishkid Well, what can I say? It's, er, cheeky isn't it? This is an example of a thread within Dr Who fan art of 'motivational' posters. The caption lives at the bottom, is usually written in a serious font and that's the point at which it all usually breaks down. The caption often doesn't hit hard enough. Don't get me wrong. A caption doesn't have to say very much in the history of philosophical ideas, but it ought to do more than just raise a wry smile. One example of that might be a picture of the TARDIS with the door open and the oft repeated slogan, "The Doctor is in". That's fine as far as it goes, but that's about as far as it goes. If the point of your art is specifically to make a statement then it needs to do it with some measure of shock. The punk movement is alleged to have done something like that, for example. My beef with them is that they just weren't shocking enough; sorry, all you punk fans out there. I appreciate that 'topical art' lasts only as long as a topic is topical, but today is arguably the topical time for this.

Hello, I'm Paul Hammans, terminal 'Who' obsessive, F1 fan, reader of arcane literature about ideas and generalist scribbler. To paraphrase someone much better at aphorisms than I: I strive to write something worth reading and when I cannot do that I try to do something worth writing. I have my own Dr Who oriented blog at http://www.exanima.co.uk
