2. Who Gave Clara The Number To The Tardis?
The Doctor first meets the version of Clara Oswald that would become his companion, when she called the number to his Tardis. She said that the number was given to her by a "a woman in the shop," who told her, "it's the best helpline out there. In the universe." So who was the woman in the shop? Let's narrow down the suspects. Sally Sparrow. She owns a shop and while she never traveled with The Doctor, after her adventure with the Weeping Angels, it is conceivable that he returned and gave her his number if any other problems arose. A former companion. Remember, Clara said the woman was, "in the shop," she never said the woman worked there. Possible suspects include Martha Jones and Sarah Jane Smith. River Song could be ruled out as Clara met River later and failed to recognize her. The Woman in White. Out of left field, but she has a history of being able to break the time lock and interact with at least one person important to The Doctor. Why not a second? The Tardis. The Doctor's time and space machine has a history of putting The Doctor where he "needs" to be. Could it have intercepted the call? The most intriguing possibility is that the number was given to Clara by a time splintered version of herself! Regardless of who gave Clara the number, perhaps an equally big mystery is why The Doctor didn't seem concerned about a mysterious woman giving out his number to strangers.
