Doctor Who: The Time Of The Doctor Trailer - 11 Questions For Christmas

7. Are The Silence Really Villains?

Ok, this one's admittedly off the wall, but hear me out. The whole reason The Order of The Silence wanted The Doctor dead was because of something so universally dangerous, it would screw everything up. "The Question That Must Never Be Asked" was the impetus for The Silence to hunt down and kill The Doctor. Not because they wanted the Universe, not because they even wanted Earth. Hell, they helped us get into Space, which kick starts everything for Humanity when you really look at our future Whovian history. Their methods weren't exactly honorable, after all they DID kidnap a child and raise them to be a psychopath, but their intent wasn't exactly one of megalomania. Better still, it was the Order that did that, not the Silence themselves. We don't even know how The Silence are created or where they come from, all we know is that there's an Order dedicated to them, Madame Kovarian seemed to be at the head of it, and even she had to keep them contained and controlled. So maybe The Silence are a race of aliens/creations that are being manipulated for the sole purpose of killing The Doctor, but it still remains that they seem to be merely pawns in this galactic endgame. The random and vague action shots of The Silence in the trailer don't fit with the stereotypical image of The Silence being the huge baddies they've been made out to be, and towards the beginning of the latest trailer I noticed something. There's an interesting snippet of a man €“ possibly The Doctor - walking in front of them, brandishing a cane that he later uses as a gun. The funny thing is, it's a vague enough shot that it looks like he could be walking in front of them, as if to be leading them into battle. Maybe, just maybe, The Silence are in more of a grey area of morality than we think.
