4. Peri - The Caves Of Androzani

The Doctor has enough on his plate with all the villains of the galaxy arrayed against him; he's faced 'death' and regeneration at the hands (or as the result of the actions of) the Daleks, the Cybermen, the Master, the Rani, street gangs and even his own people. He shouldn't have to worry about his companions accidentally ending his life. Yet it's happened twice. Wilfred got himself stuck in a chamber, forcing the Tenth Doctor to save him at the cost of his own life. Worse still was Peri, a companion so clueless she got the Fifth Doctor killed on their second adventure together. In the caves of Androzani Minor, Peri stumbles into some highly toxic and lethal plant life and becomes trapped. The Doctor, being the hero he is, pulls her free. The result; they become infected with the Spectrox toxaemia, a condition that causes rash, cramp, spasms, slow paralysis of the thoracic spinal nerve and finally death. Unfortunately for the Doctor, he is only able to locate enough anti-toxin, the milk of a queen bat, for one person. Like the Tenth Doctor, he saves his companion rather than heal himself. At least Wilf became infected trying to save the life of another person. Peri simply wasn't looking where she was going. Their relationship didn't improve that much when she travelled with the Sixth Doctor either...
