Doctor Who: 10 Superfans Who Landed Starring Roles
1. Rowan Atkinson
You might be thinking "what are you talking about, Tim? Rowan Atkinson was never in Doctor Who". Well, I'm afraid to say you are wrong, but also a little bit right as well. Let me explain.
During the dark times where Doctor Who was taken off the air, the BBC did little to no good to keep the Doctor Who brand from being seen in a negative light. It would be the subject of parody sketch shows and campy TV adverts. In 1999 as part of a Comic Relief sketch Doctor Who was revived with Rowan Atkinson playing the lead role. The story was called "Curse Of Fatal Death" and was written by future Doctor Who showrunner, Steven Moffat.
"One of the producer's husbands is obsessed with Doctor Who and I think when she started to produce the show he thought this was an ideal opportunity to actually write the Doctor for once" - Richard Curtis
The episode was filmed at Pinewood Studios in England and featured the return of The Master and The Daleks. It also co-starred Julia Sawalha, who played an unnamed assistant who has recently become engaged to The Doctor.
"The first person we asked was Rowan because I knew he'd always wanted to have played Doctor Who. So he said yes instantly. He's the first one." - Richard Curtis
