Doctor Who: 10 Things You Didn't Know About The Pantheon Of The Gods

6. They're Unofficially Called The Gods of Chaos

During the Doctor Who Unleashed episode for The Devil's Chord, Russell T Davies revealed that he rather likes the name "Gods of Chaos" as a descriptor for the various members of the Pantheon.

This feels like the logical next step for what we initially understood as the Pantheon of Discord. Why? Well, Merriam-Webster defines discord as a "lack of agreement or harmony", which sounds a bit too civilised for a terrifying group of cosmic gods!

Chaos on the other hand is all about confusion, unpredictability, and danger, which is exactly what the Pantheon of the Gods represents. For a hero like the Doctor – who can usually find harmony among the discord by talking themselves out of situations – "Gods of Chaos" feels like the perfect foil.

The Doctor can't reason with chaos, so what does that turn him into? How far will he have to go to stop them? It's an interesting question that gives us new stories to tell in Doctor Who. The sheer godlike power and unpredictability of the Pantheon has really upped the ante in stories like The Giggle and The Devil's Chord, so it's exciting to see what's next.

And if we're honest, the general feeling of chaos in modern Doctor Who stories feels appropriate for the 2020s, too!
