11. The Things He Wears On His Head
The Stetson: allowed him to fully assume the persona of "The Cowboy," which was a performance absolutely wonderful to watch. Also, it totally gets shot off five minutes after you see it. Two American stereotypes, five minutesnot bad. The fez: hilarious. Adorable. Ridiculous. Need I say more? I suspect that he wore the fez just because he had been so successful with the bowtie and was wondering how far he could take his ironic sense of what was cool. The Victorian hats (the bowler and top hat): made him look very dapper, and very slick. Lent him a gravitas and aura of "suave" that gave his new outfits immediate credibility. Except, of course, when the top hat was featured during the Pond wedding and was aptly ridiculous, lending him an ironic incredibility (ironic considering the circumstances, of course). The deerstalker: a brief, but memorable appearance. The Doctor's Sherlock Holmes impression was brilliant. The glasses: not only were these a sentimental throwback to a companion we all loved, but the glasses made the 11th Doctor look very, very sharp. Sharp and melancholy. I doubt they were quite period, but they certainly added to his new outfit, and I hope they get a comeback. The...beard? Fake, perhaps; patchy, certainly; but this was the first time we ever got to see the Doctor with a beard. And who doesn't love beards? So that's what I think. What do you think? Feel free to comment!
