Doctor Who: 12 Annoying Characters, Companions And Villains

7. Adam Mitchell

Adam Mitchell Yet another boy genius - self proclaimed this time - who we first meet in Dalek, when The Doctor and Rose follow a distress signal to an underground alien museum. He seems nice enough; eager to please and happy to geek around with his alien weapons collection. Nice enough, that is, until he rolls underneath the closing barrier door, leaving Rose for dead with the increasingly confused and agitated Dalek. Rose, however, forgives him and persuades The Doctor to allow Adam aboard the TARDIS for their next adventure, in which they find themselves aboard Satellite Five in the episode The Long Game. Just typing that makes me hanker for a Kronk burger with cheese! While The Doctor and Rose are investigating the reason for the heat on the news floor and getting to know Cathica, Adam has his own agenda. He sneaks down a few floors to have an information port - identical to Cathica's - installed into his brain. He then very stupidly calls his parents' answering machine to give them information about the future that nobody should have access to, and then he "spikes" into the main frame, thereby giving the Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe - and also, therefore, The Editor - enough information about The Doctor for the two to be able to form a plot to destroy our Time Lord. Thankfully Cathica steps in, helping to confuse and destroy "Max" and The Editor, and the TARDIS crew are able to leave safely. Despite Adam's plaintive (and frankly pathetic) begging, an angry Nine drops Adam and his information port home and leaves him there in disgust after destroying Adam's parents' answering machine and all the information held on it. Adam somewhat reminds me of Adric and I do sometimes wonder if there were deliberate similarities drawn between the two. Adam manages to make himself annoying, obnoxious and unlikeable within ten minutes of The Long Game - even misusing Rose's phone. Aside from the phone, Adric did more or less exactly that same thing in order to endear himself to viewers.
