The Face of Boe's death scene required the character to do a lot of talking, as well as a lot of emoting - certainly much more than in his previous appearances.

However - according to Davies - the Face of Boe prop that the Doctor Who team had worked with previously was just "a sheet of rubber", which would've been impossible to work with in Gridlock, because Boe needed to be out of his glass casing.

And so, this version of Boe was a brand-new build, constructed in such a way that the production team was able to give the character an emotional send-off.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
