Doctor Who: 14 Most Paused Moments Of The Last Decade
2. Missy Who? (Dark Water)
...It's Missy! Or the Mistress. Or the Master. Or whatever the hell you want to call her. Seriously. It's your call. Michelle Gomez was initially introduced at the end of the Series 8 premiere, Deep Breath, but, after a scattered string of tantalising cameo appearances that only contributed absolutely nothing to the overriding story arc, it wasn't until the grand finale that fans finally discovered who she was. OK, so pretty much everybody had already sussed it out by that point, but the show's dramatic reveal that she was a female incarnation of the Doctor's arch nemesis was enough to well and truly tear the very stratosphere of the Doctor Who fandom apart... and then some. It was one of those 'Earth shattering' Doctor Who twists that nobody saw coming, except everyone totally did. They do try, though. Still, that didn't detract from the momentous moment which managed to leave the nation on the edge of their seats, and not only because it was a classic Steven Moffat scenario in that it was actually four cliffhangers for the price of one. The Master was back (but how?!), Cybermen were invading Earth (but how?!), Clara Oswald was trapped (but how?)! and Danny Pink was about to delete his emotions (seriously, like... how?!). But, most importantly, the Master was back, and it was like he had never been away. Erm... she had never been away. Oh. Who even knows and/or cares anymore?! Missy is the Master. Deal with it, OK?!
