Doctor Who: 5 Reasons The Twelfth Doctor's Screwdriver Should Regenerate

4. It Would Be An Interesting Plot Development

After the David Tennant era, Doctor Who itself went through an entire reboot with the introduction of a more fairytale-like ambiance, a space age TARDIS redesign and, of course, a new sonic screwdriver. At the conclusion of The Eleventh Hour, the Doctor brandishes this refined, revamped screwdriver, thrusting it in our awe-stricken faces. It's as simple as that. A broken Tenth Doctor screwdriver, only to be abruptly replaced by a new one... all in a flash of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimeyness without any pretence or explanation as to how the Doctor managed to get his hands on the thing. What if Twelve's screwdriver were somehow lost or damaged midway through Series 9? Knowing the Doctor, he probably broke it in a fit of Scottish ranting with his bare hands, inadvertently dropped it into the time vortex or unknowingly projected it into outer space whilst meditating on top of the TARDIS. Imagine the immediate emotional repercussions. The big bad Time Lord would weep surreptitiously in a corner while Clara smirked at his carelessness. What would be most intriguing is to observe the Doctor manufacturing a new one, wearing work goggles as sparks ejected and sprayed from his welding tools. If the destruction of his cherished screwdriver was by no means an accident, however, then a nasty fate awaits whomever dared to meddle with the Doctor's most valued possession. Lots of lethal cabinetry would be assembled in the culprit's general direction, amongst other things.
