Doctor Who 60th Anniversary: 10 Huge Rumours And Leaks You Need To Know

6. Mel Bush Might Be Returning

Doctor Who Bonnie Langford as Mel Bush

A friend of the Sixth and Seventh Doctors, Mel Bush was last seen in the companion support group in The Power of the Doctor.

But if some dialogue spoken by Catherine Tate while filming the 60th anniversary specials is to be believed, then Mel might be back on our screens - again - in 2023.

"What about Mel?", Tate appears to say, as she steps out of the TARDIS in an on-set video. "Oh yeah, she's brilliant, isn't she?" responds David Tennant, who sounds like he hasn't lost a step since leaving the show over 12 years ago.

Now, sure, we could be hearing that dialogue incorrectly, and even if we aren't, "Mel" doesn't automatically mean Mel Bush. It could be any random character with that name. Hell, it could even be Melody Pond - an anniversary special would certainly be a good time to bring River back into the fold!

That said, it's also been reported that Bonnie Langford will be back as Mel in the near future - but we should take this with a grain of salt for now.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for over ten years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. In 2022, he took charge of WhoCulture and has grown it into the biggest Doctor Who channel on YouTube, and one of the biggest Doctor Who communities on the web full-stop. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
