Doctor Who: EVERY Series Opener Ranked Worst To Best
12. Spyfall
Continuing the theme of a Doctor's second series kicking off with an epic two-parter, Series 12 brought us Spyfall – a thrilling globe-trotting adventure with proper bank holiday blockbuster vibes. Naturally, it also features the show’s own Bond villain, who is unmasked halfway through in one of modern Doctor Who's killer cliffhangers.
Part One has everything, from plane, car and motorbike set pieces to some truly stunning location work in South Africa.
Part Two is just as ambitious, but not quite as convincing. The Kasaavins' plot is cool but needlessly complex, and the decision to incorporate real-world trailblazers Ada Lovelace and Noor Inayat Khan is commendable, but you can’t help but wish that they’d each had a story to themselves.
However, it’s also a brilliant showcase for the new Master, with Sacha Dhawan excelling in the role. And just when you think it’s all over, his holographic message for the Doctor throws everything into question, setting up the rest of the series in style.
It’s not quite as strong as the other Jodie Whittaker openers, but still tremendous fun. And any story where Graham does the ol' soft-shoe shuffle isn't without merit!
