Doctor Who: Looking Back At The Alternate Doctors

5. The Shalka Doctor

Doctor Who Shalka DoctorWho Played Him? Richard E. Grant When Did He Appear? The 2003 animated webcast Scream Of The Shalka Technically, this Doctor was the original Ninth Doctor before Russell T. Davies retconned him as non-canon but he is now universally regarded as a parallel universe Doctor, with writer Paul Cornell describing Scream Of The Shalka as his equivalent of the Unbound series. The juxtaposition of this Doctor€™s darker and more troubled nature (a lot of which would become an integral part of the Ninth Doctor) with his more lighthearted moments doesn€™t always pay off too well but some of his quips are amusing enough and he€™s more than charismatic enough to carry the story. On the other hand, the implication (which was later confirmed by Paul Cornell) that he is in a sexual relationship with an android that houses the Master's mind really doesn€™t sit too well. Regardless of that though, he€™s still a well written and interesting character that would have done well as the real Ninth Doctor.
