Doctor Who: Ranking New Who Finales From Worst To Best

5. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang

This is a rather confusing finale to talk about because it's both baffling, whilst also being one of the best finales we've ever had. The Pandorica Opens is such a delight in its mysteries, and steady build up to the grand unveiling. Oh, my gosh! All of The Doctor's greatest enemies have come together to lay out the perfect trap, and then end up locking the Time Lord in a prison cell. One of the most shocking moments in Doctor Who's history.

Come the next episode, The Big Bang, we're confronted with a very contained plotline, that's built around confusing time travel, and Steven Moffat injecting way too much of his madness into the script. It's just a complete contrast to what came before, and I honestly couldn't tell you if that's a good thing, or a bad thing. Usually seeing Steven Moffat go in a completely different direction makes me feel annoyed inside, but here it somehow works. Maybe it's because it feels clever? I don't know.

The whole plot surrounding the issue of the universe slowly disintegrating genuinely feels impactful, and you feel the weight of the narrative's urgency. And it has a few neat surprises along the way. Let's not forget about all the beautiful scenes Matt Smith has before his inevitable erasure from reality. At the same time you feel cheated that the Alliance plotline is thrown to the curb, as that was a really exciting premise. Also, it's rather odd that The Big Bang is ultimately a weird sexual in-joke for Steven Moffat's personal pleasure.
