Doctor Who: Ranking New Who Finales From Worst To Best

4. The Wedding Of River Song

When it came to The Wedding of River Song, there was a lot to wrap up. Never before did we need answers so badly in Doctor Who, as well as some satisfying pay offs to a season worth of maddening Steven Moffat mysteries. It's hard to say whether this finale was successful in giving us a well-rounded conclusion to Series 6's events, but it most certainly had a good crack at it.

One of its biggest downfalls was that it wasn't a two part finale, with the narrative feeling too cramped at times for its own good. I doubt even Steven Moffat knew what to do with every single plot thread he had concocted. What probably seemed like a good idea at first, quickly became a nightmare to solve, as his own creativity ultimately got the better of him.

Visually it's an intriguing episode, what with the world being all messed up because of River's attempts to prevent herself from killing The Doctor. And the wedding sequence is genuinely emotional, and does cement a lot of The Doctor and River's complicated relationship quite nicely. There are many corners that Steven Moffat wrote himself into, and for the most part he got out of them with at least some dignity, but it's hard not looking at this tale as a big mess, that crumbles under the pressure of bringing so many different story arcs together. Though the Brigadier tribute was most appreciated.
