Each Member Of The Always Sunny Gang Ranked From Worst To Best
4. Ronald 'Mac' MacDonald
Played by the show's creator Rob McElhenney, Mac is a unique and fantastic challenge to the sitcom character traditional format, as with all the others in the series. He is also the character that has seen the most iterations throughout the show's run.
We've had: dumb Mac, deeply religious Mac, security Mac, fat Mac, and a few more. Overall, the character has a unique place in the group, but has been a little less consistent than the others, having gone through stages and changes rather frequently. Whilst Franks lack of change brings the character down, Mac's reliance on reinvention goes too far in the opposite direction.
His alterations throughout the show have always blended into each other and felt genuine to the character. However, the lack of consistency (whilst keeping him fresh) is not entirely beneficial.
When compared to the others - at least, before he came out - Mac didn't feel like he had a distinct identity. Frank was gross, Dennis was manipulative, Dee was pathetic, Charlie was unstable, but Mac - whilst having a good few character traits - didn't have a strong and clear motive or direction.
After coming out, Mac became a bit more consistent as a character; however, we seem in the later seasons to have lost the aggressive edge that he once had. Overall Mac works well, and his development has been one of the show's best, but at times the phases he goes through diminishes his identity, and that is why he ranks penultimate last place.
