In the infancy of the show, it seemed that the character of Dee was there for the wrong purposes. She felt more like an inconsequential supporting member, who played devil's advocate, and primarily acted as the character looking in on the gang and passing judgement on them.

That all changed, however, when the role went to Kaitlin Olson, and she gained the freedom to carve out a legacy for the character.

Upon auditioning, Kaitlin read what she believed to be a fantastic scene and easily won the role, only to find out when filming that the scene did not even belong to the character of Dee and was rather dialogue from Dennis. From the beginning, she knew that she had to work hard to prove that Dee should be allowed to reach heights of comedy like the others, and she certainly did.

Remaining consistent in her character, but still going through changes and development, Kaitlin Olson brings Dee to the forefront of the show. The character's position as the punching bag of the group, always taking shots and insults put her in the centre of the comedy of the series.

Dee is a flawlessly performed character, who shows a toxicity that matches all of the others. But, her desire to prove herself as a comedian allows her to delve into more slapstick and goofy humour, helping the character to stand out.
