Every Inside No. 9 Episode Ranked From Worst To Best

19. Tempting Fate

Inside No 9
BBC

Plot: While some council contractors (Pemberton, Shearsmith and Weruche Opia) are clearing out a dead man's flat, they find a mysterious artefact with the power to grant wishes.

Location: A flat.

Tempting Fate is perhaps overshadowed by some of the other episodes from the season, since it lacks the shocks of the others and is cut from far more familiar material. Therefore, when rewatching it you'll be pleasantly surprised as you'll remember just how great this episode really is.

The episode's 'Be careful what you wish for' story might be familiar, but when it's done in such a thought-provoking and gloriously brutal way as it is here it's difficult to care too much. Even though you'll probably guess where the story is headed, the third act is still a savage, jaw-dropping blast (bar one revelation which doesn't quite add up) that wraps it all up beautifully.

It's certainly not a cheerful story, but thanks to typically strong dark humour - much of which is courtesy of Weruche Opia's (who you might recognize from I May Destroy You) hilarious guest performance - it's also plenty of fun to watch.

All in all, an excellent end to the show's best season to date
