Game Of Thrones: 10 Most Overrated Episodes
5. Winterfell (Season 8, Episode 1)
This wasn't the most offensive episode in the last season of Thrones, but that's like saying Trump wasn't the most offensive head of state in a line up of Trump, Hussein, Hitler and Stalin.
The only saving aspect in this episode was John Bradley's performance as Samwell Tarly. There were two potentially massive moments for him. Firstly his interaction with Dany, when she revealed she killed both his father and brother. It was a touching performance from Sam, but almost immediately he was thrown into a scene with Bran that contained more laughable deadpan deliveries.
Secondly, Sam revealed to Jon his true lineage, but because the audience had already been told this (twice), the emotional weight was taken out of the scene. It was a prime example of the writers deploying key bits of information to get an early pay off, only for the show to suffer down the line.
The final scene was pretty terrifying. We were shown the young Ned Umber, pinned to a wall surrounded by one of the Night King's gruesome signals. But again, everything was undercut by what had come previously. The last time we saw Tormund and Beric, they were slap bang at the top of the Wall moments before it came crashing down in a torrent of icy dragon breath. But low and behold. here they were, safe and sound.
