Game Of Thrones: 5 Spin-Offs That'd Be Just As Good

1. The Blackfyre Rebellions

Out of all the established Game of Thrones lore, nothing is as suited for a screen adaption as the Blackfyre Rebellions.

A hundred years before Ned Stark was named Hand of the King, King Aegon IV Targaryen (not to be confused with Aegon V, better known as Egg) legitimized his bastard son Daemon and gave him the Targaryen ancestral sword Blackfrye. Blackfyre is typically handed down from king to king, so by giving it to Daemon it seemed that Aegon was naming him as his successor instead of his true born son, Daeron. Further complicating matters, Aegon legitimized the rest of his countless bastards on his deathbed.

With King Aegon dead, Daeron was named his successor, much to his half-brother Daemon's displeasure. Daemon was older than Daeron, legitimized as true born, and was given Blackfyre, so he believed the throne belonged to him. Wielding the Targaryen ancestral sword his father gave him, Daemon declared himself King Daemon Blackfyre and claimed the Iron Throne. The Seven Kingdoms seemingly split in two, with half supporting Daeron and half Daemon. War was inevitable.

But that was just the beginning. After Daemon's rebellion ended there were four more Blackfyre Rebellions. Aegon's seemingly simple act of legitimization ended up haunting the Targaryen's for years.

The story of the Blackfyre wars is quite interesting, and one of the most important and captivating figures in it is Brynden Rivers. A cunning commander and morally grey individual, Brynden is like a Tywin Lannister you can't help but root for. His ever-growing influence during the conflict and his decision making throughout it is both thought provoking and unexpected. Game of Thrones fans would quickly grow to love the intimidating and unpredictable Brynden Rivers, if they don't already. Brynden has actually already appeared in Thrones; he was Bran's mentor beyond the Wall, the Three-Eyed Raven. Brynden's journey from politics to greenseeing is captivating, and could be wonderfully told in this show.

The Blackfyre Rebellions, like Game of Thrones, is full of political intrigue, spectacular battles, and fantastic characters. The topic is similar enough to Thrones that it will attract its fans, but different enough that it won't feel derivative. For the most part the series could exist independently from its predecessor, other than the occasional tie-in to satisfy fans. A television show focused on the Blackfyre Rebellions is exactly what Game of Thrones fans want, whether they know it or not.
