Game Of Thrones: 5 Spin-Offs That'd Be Just As Good
Winter has come, and spin-offs are coming next.
Game of Thrones is nearing its end. With Season 6 behind us, there are now only two shortened seasons remaining. But don't worry, there is still hope.
Game of Thrones has been incredibly successful. The series is HBO's highest rated program of all time and the most pirated television series ever. Critics love the show just as much as fans do, and Game of Thrones recently became the most awarded television show in the history of the Emmys. Thrones has even transcended typical television popularity and become a cultural phenomenon. "Valar Morghulis" is a mainstream term, Dothraki is being taught at schools, and Arya and Khalessi are two of the most popular baby names in last five years (ironic, considering her name is Daenerys and Khalessi is a title).
Naturally, HBO executives are loving this success and want to keep it going for as long as possible. So when reports came out that the network was considering a spin-off, it wasn't surprising, it was inevitable.
But what will the spin-off be about? The world of Game of Thrones is so unique and fully-realized that the possibilities are seemingly endless. Plus, George R.R. Martin has already created and established a detailed history of Westeros, adding even more options. It will be a tough decision for HBO, but if they choose one of these five topics, the spin-off will be a success.
5. Dunk And Egg
Game of Thrones was an adaption of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, so it would only make sense if its follow up also derived from Martin's source material. Martin's Dunk and Egg novellas are set in Westeros eighty-nine years before Game of Thrones begins, and they follow the adventures of the Hedge Knight Dunk and his dedicated squire, Egg.
Martin has published three Dunk and Egg novellas so far, and all three were fantastic. Although they are lighter in tone than the rest of Game of Thrones, the stories feel like a natural addition to Martin's Westeros-canon. One primary reason for the novellas' organic feeling is the success of its two lead characters.
Dunk is a self-conscience yet imposing knight, and Egg is his young, big-mouthed squire. Both characters are immediately relatable and likable, and both went on to become Westerosi legends. Egg - who's full name is Aegon Targaryen the fifth - ends up becoming King of the Seven Kingdoms, and his best friend Dunk becomes his Lord Commander of the King's Guard. Recognize the name Ser Duncan the Tall? That's because he is mentioned in Game of Thrones as being one of the greatest knights of all time.
Though these two friends went on to become incredibly important figures, George R.R. Martin's first three novellas have followed Dunk and Egg during their youth. Martin has revealed that he has as many as twelve Dunk and Egg novellas planned, and that the series will trace their entire lives. Considering Martin is a little busy with The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, a television series would be a great way to tell the adventures of Dunk and Egg. Just as book readers gravitated to the Dunk and Egg novellas while waiting for Martin's next book, Game of Thrones fans would flock to a Dunk and Egg spin-off once Thrones finishes.
