In Season 1, Cameron Monaghans Jerome raised the eyebrows of many viewers who cited his performance as an eerily foreboding nod towards a certain Clown Prince of Crime. It seems that those intentions may be pure, as show-runner Bruno Hellier has stated that The beginning of Season 2 is the very earliest origins of how The Joker came to be. Dubbing the Gotham version of The Joker as pre-embryonic, Heller has confirmed that Monaghan will be a Season 2 regular. However, Heller has a penchant for creating twists for the audience and we may see a red herring in the character of Jerome. Nevertheless, it appears that Gerome, a part of Galavan's cabal, has taken a shining to Barbara Kean. This could result in an even more twisted version of the Sid and Nancy-esque Joker and Harley. Because a relationship which consists of a homicidal clown who will throw a baby at you as a distraction and a once-brilliant psychiatrist who is his physically and mentally abused lover definitely isnt twisted enough. Creating a concrete origin story for The Joker is something that many a writer has tried but none of these stories have been established as in-canon. As The Joker once infamously stated by the villain in Alan Moores The Killing Joke, "If Im going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!" It is going to be a gamble for I but, at the very least, it will result in interesting characterisation and Monaghans seems to be having a blast with the role. Heres hoping that this new Joker will look a little less at home singing Never Gonna Give You Up as the season progresses.
