MacGyver Season 3 Premiere: 8 Ups & 2 Downs From 'Improvise'
4. The Lack Of Conflict Resolution Between Mac & His Dad
MacGyver spent years searching for his father, and that search culminated in the previous season, when it was revealed that daddy dearest had not only been watching Mac this entire time, but was also his boss. Awkward. Considering this show is on network television, many fans had assumed that the conflict between the two characters would've been resolved rather quickly. Once again, the MacGyver writers are subverting the norm, and - much like they are with Mac's refusal to return to Phoenix - are sticking to their guns, and having their protagonist do the same (or sticking to his tools, in Mac's case).
The writers and showrunners should be applauded for this, because it would be ridiculously unbelievable to have Mac and his dad on good terms this early into their relationship. Perhaps they'll never rekindle their father/son bond, or perhaps it'll take time, but either option is superior than having them make amends at this stage. It's not plausible to have them on the same page yet. What's more, the conflict between the two characters will provide some great story material moving forward.
