2. "Arrested" - Season 4, Episode 7
... in which he reprimands Haley for her bad judgement This is the first, and so far only, episode that we see Phil angry. Not just angry, but scary angry. Dad angry. Haley, who is away at school, gets arrested after a drunken altercation with a police officer. Initially worried for her well-being, Claire and Phil go to the campus, rescue their daughter from jail and then escort her back to her dorm room to prepare for a meeting with the school's dean and student liaison. Once back at her disgusting dorm, Haley expresses a very laid back attitude about the ordeal which sends Phil into a frenzy. He shockingly reprimands Haley for not being a serious student, for breaking the law, and for disappointing him to no end. After making a short speech about how she can't be treated as an adult and the difference between real life and movies, he storms out of the room, Claire proudly following. At the meeting, Haley is made aware that she is going to be kicked out of school, but not before delivering a very heartfelt speech about how she now understands the pain she's caused to her family and the embarrassment she's caused for the school. They clean out her dorm room and take her home, ultimately telling her that they forgive her for what she's done and promising that life at home would be vastly different from what it was like when she was in high school. Phil demonstrates, quite expertly, that constant yelling and promises of eternal disappointment mean less and less, no matter what the situation. When used sparingly, reprimanding will yield drastically positive results.
