Preacher TV Series: Everything You Need To Know

5. W Earl Brown Is Sheriff Hugo Root

The angels are a surprise addition to the main ensemble of Preacher, but the show absolutely couldn€™t work without the presence of Sheriff Hugo Root. A recurring antagonist throughout the early parts of the comics series, he€™s the father of Arse-Face (whose real name is Eugene Root), who has his own ideas about the fate of America and religion. Taking the part of the stereotypical, evangelical racist redneck nut, Root is an alcoholic who often rants about how all of the country€™s ills and moral degradation have nothing to do with the disappearance of God, and everything to do with €œMartian n-words€, whatever those are. He€™s not particularly sympathetic, basically. Whilst he€™s never a major threat to Jesse Custer and co, Root does cause some trouble at the start of their journey, before being dispatched in a very, ahem, visceral manner. W Earl Brown is yet another piece of inspired casting, a veteran comedic character actor seen in the likes of There€™s Something About Mary, Scream, and foul-mouthed HBO Western Deadwood.
