15. Owen Slater

Boardwalk Empire
HBO

Before he was throwing fists around Netflix as Matt Murdock, Charlie Cox was breaking skulls as the right-hand enforcer for Nucky Thompson.

Owen Slater's arrival in the second season seemed almost throwaway at first - the quick-witted, Irish sleuth wooed both Margaret Schroeder and her servants, and could have been regarded as nothing more than a smiling scamp here to shake things up for Nucky. But quickly he proved himself as both competent and visceral as he beat and killed Nucky's opponents.

If there were some grievances to be had with the character, it would the inconsistency of his allegiances; with one breath he is prepared to abandon Nucky and flee with Margaret Schroeder at a moment's notice, and the next he is dutifully watching over, protecting and planning executions on Nucky's behalf.

Owen's time on the show was short-lived, and while it would have been great if he stuck around more (and maybe lived), a season as violent as the third needed a gut-wrenching death to shake up the audience. And what better way to do it, than to return Owen to his sender in a big wooden box.

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
