Ranking Every Episode From Love, Death And Robots
14. Lucky 13
Despite a leading performance from Emmy winner Samira Wiley, Lucky 13 feels surface level and predictable throughout and the ending solidifies that. During an unspecified conflict, lieutenant Colby is assigned to the dropship Lucky 13, a ship that lost its last two crews in combat.
The CGI is impeccable throughout which manages to make the action somewhat engrossing and explosive. Wiley is a compelling lead and brings emotion to the piece. Unfortunately, it is the narrative that let's the short down. It feels cliché and overly simple to the point where you can't help but question what the point of this short is.
If Lucky 13 is just an exercise in good animation then Beyond the Aquila Rift and The Secret War have already done that and were able to give us strong characters and an interesting story at the same time. Lucky 13 is forgettable and rather boring by the time it is all over.
