Rick And Morty: All Season 1 Episodes Ranked

2. Something Ricked This Way Comes

Rick and Morty Jerry
Adult Swim

Rick finds his match in Something Ricked This Way Comes, in one of the show's best villains yet: the Devil. Not the horned red demon we're used to, but the owner of an antique shop that sells magically cursed items (not to mention the fact that he's Summer's boss). The Devil is Rick's nemesis.

While Rick spends almost the entirety of the episode trying to discredit and attack his foe, Morty and Jerry are abducted by aliens who fall in love with Jerry after he proudly states, "Pluto is a planet." As it turns out, the Plutonians are just using Jerry as a propaganda figurehead to disguise the truth that Mars is, in fact, shrinking. Jerry being Jerry, he refuses to believe this even when Morty tries to open his eyes, but eventually he does discover the truth. All in all, it's a terrific father-son story for Jerry and Morty, as well as a wonderful allegory of Earth's own environmental problems, and the attempts to cover them up.

After Rick's attacks (which are very amusing to watch) drive him to suicide, the Devil is saved by Summer, who helps him rebuild his reputation. The fact that Summer sides with the Devil over her own grandfather says something about the depth and complexity of her character, just as Rick's declaration of war on the Devil says something about his character.

Something Ricked Comes This Way epitomises all that is good about Rick and Morty. The character development, the parallelism, and just the fact that it is enjoyable to watch secure its place among the very best Rick and Morty episodes ever.
