The Simpsons: 10 Times Homer Really Should Have Died

3. Duel With A Southern Colonel

Homer's brash, headstrong attitude can land him in hot water at times, but combine this with a blatant disregard for his own safety and there's a recipe for disaster. Not only does he risk his own life, but he puts his family in harm's way too. After seeing a movie in "E-I-E-I (Annoyed Grunt)" Homer decides to solve all of life's problems by challenging people to duels: something which eventually gets him into serious trouble. He eventually challenges the wrong guy - a Southern gentleman that says "Suh" - leading Homer to flee town with his family in tow. They find shelter on Grampa's old farm, before being forced to return to Springfield after the animals develop a dangerous addiction to his tomacco plants. The colonel is still pitched outside the Simpson house, waiting to duel. Homer finally has to deal with the situation that he created, but just as they're about to duel, the colonel is distracted by Marge's mincemeat pies. Even though it looks like Homer has wriggled out of more deadly circumstances, he demands they continue with the duel. His pig-headed behaviour leads to him being shot, luckily only in the arm. It's a real wonder that he wasn't killed, as you'd generally expect a man who regularly carries firearms to be fairly proficient - and accurate - in their use.
