In the third season of The Original Series, Kirk takes the Enterprise into the Neutral Zone, seemingly without orders to do so. He starts acting erratically and is soon confronted by the Romulans. The Commander orders him to surrender. Kirk and Spock are both brought aboard and a game of deception begins, but who is deceiving whom? The Romulan Commander (played brilliantly by Joanna Linville) takes a passionate shine to Spock and seeks to seduce him.

Meanwhile, Kirk fakes his own death, disguises himself as a Romulan and sneaks back aboard their ship. His real objective is revealed, to steal a Romulan cloaking device. When the Romulans discover that they have been played they pursue, only to see the Enterprise cloak before their eyes.

While the Romulans have always been presented as duplicitous and cunning, this episode expertly shows that sometimes their fierce emotions can sometimes get the better of them and that the players can sometimes be played. Spock and the Commander's romantic sub-plot also indicates that while these two species grew apart, there was always hope to bring them back together, which leads on to...
