After the events of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's series finale, "What You Leave Behind", Deep Space 9 itself was left intact, with Doctor Bashir, Ezri Dax, Lieutenant Nog, and Quark remaining on the station, now under the command of Colonel Kira.

In Pocket Books' non-canon Deep Space Nine relaunch novels, the station would come to be commanded by Ro Laren, now a Starfleet captain. Deep Space 9, however would be destroyed in the novels and replaced by a new Federation-built starbase of the same name.

The 2019 documentary, "We We Left Behind", however would tell a totally different story of the station's future, as conceived of by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's former writing staff. In the hypothetical season 8 imagined by Ira Stephen Behr, Ronald D. Moore, Robert Hewitt Wolfe, René Echevarria, and Hans Beimler, Deep Space 9 would go on to become a shrine to the fallen Emissary, Benjamin Sisko.

Still under the command of now Vedek Kira, the station's Promenade would be graced with giant statues of Sisko, each holding a Bajoran orb. The station would become a Bajoran Mecca, where faithful would come to pay their respects to Sisko and view the wormhole from the Promenade.
