Star Trek: 12 Characters That Deserve Their Own Series

7. Sela Yar - The Empress & The Return Of The Iconians

Star Trek Sela Yar

Here is an amazingly intriguing character, conceived in a timeline shift of another alternate timeline shift. Sela is exceedingly important in the future story of the Romulans and the Federation. Trek fans have always wanted more information about these distant Vulcan cousins €“ their society and their past. Especially now, after the 2009 film, when we can ask what happens to them after the destruction of their homeworld. This is something you gain in great detail if you play STO.

Sela Yar made a few appearances as a Tal Shiar operative during TNG, where she was introduced. Much of her fate isn't known until the videogame utilizes her storyline predominantly in its 25th century continuity. Sela was originally exiled from Romulus when she had a power struggle with the Tal Shiar during her short time as Proconsul. During this exile, she survived the planets destruction, returning to take over as Praetor. She later converted the Republic into an empire, taking on the title of Empress and started to force her rule on what remained of the (once proud and powerful) Romulan republic.

Eventually, there is a plot line that's illustrated where Sela is under the influence of the €“once believed extinct €“ Iconian race. There's much involved in the changes resulting after the 2009 movie (effectively) changed everything, including involvement from the Borg. This leaves the door open for a great Romulan based Trek series, where Sela would be front and center.

I'm a writer, a published author, and editor for a small independent publishing house. I'm an award winning producer of independent media, and I get to edit books, screenplays, and comics in my day to day. I love working on independent film & games, during my down time, as well as reviewing films while gobbling down milk duds (it's an addiction, I know). I've been called "Geek-Prime" among my peers for all the fandoms I work in, and I wear that title proudly. It's a passion, and an exercise in my growing profession, to get to write about what I love. Which happens to be a little of everything. But mostly film, comics, horror, games, anime, literature, and life. I do write about academic material, like politics, medicine, physics, and mathematics too. But for the most part, I like to keep things down to earth and simple. Follow me on Twitter & Facebook
